Tool to easily compare and sync 2 directories

I know I can do this visually and tediously for each directory, but am hoping you guuys know a tool that can automate this. I have the same directories on my desktop and on an external drive (and a lot more on the external that I don't want on the desktop). I did some weeding of no-longer-wanted files and of course have added some new ones on the desktop. Moving new ones over is not that hard; I just do a search for files modified in the last week, say, and copy them to the external, though I have to put them in the right directories which is a pain. But nuking the deleted-from-the-external files from the desktop directories is not so easy. I have to open both directories side by side and look for discrepencies. Is there any tool that will sync directories the way I want to? I DON'T want it to nuke files on the external that I don't have on the desktop, since the external is a repository often for hardly-used files I don't want cluttering up my production machine, but DO want to make sure that files deleted from the external are deleted from the desktop, and of course all new files copied over. Am I making sense here? ;) Any suggestions? -- The truth of a thing is the feel of it, not the think of it. -- Stanley Kubrick
