Installation in progress, repair of Publisher impossible

I was repairing a damaged Publisher installation when something went wrong and the repair was interrupted. Now all attempts to pick up the repair, re-install the package, or even remove it to permit reinstallation, get an "Error 1500" message from the Setup Wizard, saying that another install is in progress and must be completed before additional action is permitted. My question is simple: how can I unflag that interrupted repair so that I can blow away the damaged package and start over from scratch, short of reformatting the entire drive? All software involved is well past EOL -- it's XP SP3, Office 11/Publisher 2003. However until today it's been doing its job well, and when kept away from dangerous places such as the internet there's no need of downgrading to current offerings... Is there a registry entry I could delete, or possibly a hidden "flag" file? I really don't want to reformat since the drive has a few dozen other tools that would have to be reinstalled also... -- Jim Kyle
