[WIN7] Changing computer names, userids, and checking network connections

My brother and family have a difficult time with their network - as knowing when it is working and what the trouble is. I'd like to clean things up a bit while looking for a bat file to help. If I change their computer names, the mapping will stop working and will need to be redone. Is there anything else? I'd also like to sync up userids across the platforms now that they finally have separate ADMIN names. If I simply change the userid, the path to their directory (and anything else?) stays at the old name. Is there any way to make the directory names change too? Does anyone have a bat file similar to this: Test connections to 5 computers by computer name? They use dhcp so the address could be different at any time. Is there a better way? Then also test connections to their router (by grabbing addr from a ipconfig?) and to the internet. Is there a way to test the mapping from the shared drive out to all the computers that access it? Then print out results as computer names connected, router connected, internet connected, and then mappings applied and working?
