On Tuesday night I got a pop up alert that I could upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. I dismissed it. A few hours later, I got another alert about the upgrade, but this time, no option to dismiss. I chose the longest possible time to delay it, 4 hours. I then went to sleep.
Overnight it upgraded me to Windows 8.1 against my will. Except it did not work.
I got the unmountable boot volume error as soon as it tried to boot.
After downloading a Windows 8.1 installation ISO and installing from that, it still gave that error. Even after deleting all partitions and installing fresh, that same error.
I have an HP laptop with an SSD I installed to replace the regular hard drive. I cloned the original hard drive with OEM Windows 8 to the SSD and that worked. It was perfectly fine until yesterday when I was upgraded against my will to Windows 8.1.
I just about had it with Windows forced updates. Whenever I get this fixed, I will disable Windows Update. I'm tired of the forced reboots.
Is it even possible to upgrade to Windows 8.1 with my SSD? How do I fix this error?
