[Excel] Freeze top row and first column

If I recall correctly, in Excel 2003 (?) you could drag a handle down from the top of the side slider bar to freeze the top row(s)...and do the same at the left of the bottom slider bar to freeze the first column(s). At work, I use a heavily crippled generic shell version of Excel (I think it's 2010?)...it has the Ribbon Bar. In any event, under View/Freeze Panes I can either freeze the top row or the first column...but not both. In addition, the option only covers the first of each (not a range). Is there any way to freeze both at the same time...or freeze multiple rows or columns? Thanks!
