The mystery of my long boot times is solved.

For the longest time I have had an issue with extremely long reboot times. It didn't matter what version of Windows that I used, it could be Windows 7 or 8.1. It would show the boot animation and then go to a black screen for God knows how much time and then finally show the login screen. And this is on a pretty beefy system with an SSD as the primary boot drive. Well, I finally narrowed down what the cause of it was. USB external hard drives. You see, I had three of them hanging off the USB 3.0 bus and the best thing that I can guess is that the system was querying the USB bus every time I booted which because of the three devices connected to it the system took forever to load. Now that I don't have three external hard drives connected to the USB bus boot up times are worthy of a system that has an SSD as the boot drive. -- Tom Tom's Tech Blog
