But can't remember its name. It was for XP. Likely around 2004-2006.
What it did was cause windows to boot into a virtual session in which nothing could be done by the user to permanently harm the computer or the operating system. When the user logged out of the session or when the computer was shut down, everything that happened during the virtual session simply disappeared. Maybe it was erased or maybe it was all in temporary memory. I don't recall.
It was not what we now call a virtual machine. It was something simpler than a full fledged virtual computer, but it did involve a free download and an install from Microsoft.
I used it for a while with no problems, but gave up on it due to the cumbersomeness of working around it to do updates and permanent downloads and to save things I wanted to save.
Now a friend has relatives and children that are always unintentionally corrupting his computer doing things they obviously shouldn't be doing. The relatives and friends are not trainable to avoid the tricks the folks who create these problems. Hence it occurs to me that the old windows security product might be the solution.
Does anyone recall what I'm trying to describe? What was the name of that Microsoft download? Does it still exist? Does it work with Windows 7 and later Windows versions? If so, how about a link to it?
