Win10 on older laptop?

About a year ago, I was given a never-used, still in the box laptop that was a few years old but had not even been opened by the neighbor who ordered it and then died. Her daughter, knowing I was (to her) a "geek" gave it to me, but I didn't bother opening the box because I was still fine with my older laptop. When I did finally fire up that one, it had Vista on it and it was too late to find a copy of Win7 (I did post here, but couldn't find one from a source I trust) and I doubted Win 8 would work on it. However, recently I've heard rumors that Win 10 might actually work on older machines. I know it wouldn't be a free upgrade from Vista, but I'm willing to pay, since I can't use my 5-computer license for Office 365 on that lappy because it doesn't include Vista (stupid move on MS' part, IMHO). That's why I really wanted to get Win 7 for it. With Win 10 coming out soon, I was wondering if anyone knows how to check if it might be able to run Win 10, even if it costs me $109. Or again, knows of a reputable source for Win7. The laptop isn't very suable for me without Office, and it's silly for me to buy an older copy of Office when I have paid for 5 licenses of 365. The requirements for Win 10 in terms of minimum RAM and HD space are no problem, though I don't know about the video card. And I know that sometimes upgrades don't work because of older NIC cards but that's never mentioned in the specs. Wish there were (and there might be soon) an "upgrade advisor" tool like with older versions that scans your computer and tells you if it can upgrade. I guess I just hate to see a laptop that is outdated but in reality almost new go into the junk pile :). -- The truth of a thing is the feel of it, not the think of it. -- Stanley Kubrick
