[WIN7] Frustrated with the backup tool

I wanted to test the built in backup/image tool in Windows 7 because I plan on upgrading the SSDs in my PC. I have been running the backup utility to create a system image to an external Western Digital HDD for some time. I hooked up a Samsung 840 EVO and started the process of restoring from the image. Everything was going well until I got to the last step and got this error message. "No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found" I made sure the SSD was formatted NTFS. The target SSD is big enough. I Googled for possible solutions. I found I went into Diskpart and type "select disk=0". Then I type "detail disk" to make sure I had the right drive. I typed "Clean", and then "exit" to get out of Diskpart. And then I started the image recovery and finally it works. Before I did these commands I had formatted the drive to one large partition, set the partition to active, and made sure it had a drive letter assigned. That didn't work. I also tried using the DISKPART utility to convert the SSD to GPT. Didn't work. I watched a YouTube video on how restoring from an image is SUPPOSED to work and it seems really easy. *sigh* Any ideas?
