[WIN10] Get "not responding" on everything after Win10 update

A week after updating my HP laptop without a problem, I decided to let the update proceed on my desktop (AMD 780G chipset, Athlon X4 CPU, Radeon video card, 8GB RAM and a Crucial SSD.) The laptop was running Windows 7 Home Premium, the desktop Windows 7 Pro. All the software was virtually the same: Outlook 2007, Quicken, Firefox, etc. When the update finished and I went through the startup screens and then the mouse and keyboard stopped responding when the desktop appeared. I rebooted and opened Outlook and Firefox. As soon as I tried to do anything in either program I got the spinning cursor and the "...is not responding" message. I could not bring up the task manager. After the next reboot, it installed the MS keyboard and mouse software. I uninstalled Avast but the same thing happened. After another reboot, got a message saying updates were being installed and after it restarted it hung on the "starting" screen with the spinning dots for 30+ minutes before I shut it down. Restarted, tried to open Quicken with the same result: spinning circle cursor, unable to bring up task manager. After a couple minutes, the screen went black except for the mouse pointer(which responded to mouse movement but otherwise did nothing.) I'm ready to roll back to Win7 unless someone can suggest something. I was hoping not do have to do a clean install because loading up all my software is such a pain. Is there anything else I can try? I'm not even sure how one does a clean install at this point.
