I know I am not the only person with this issue, judging by all the threads I found on Google, but I never found a definitive answer on how to fix it.
I access the Internet most of the time from behind a high-quality and well-configured hardware router and have the Windows FW turned off. However, I sometimes use a VPN and Windows insists on treating that as an insecure public network. Supposedly I should have the ability to change any specific network's type, icon, and description if I change the settings in the Group Policy Editor (which I have done), but it still won't let me tweak the VPN to be anything other than public.
Once in a while I travel and I would like the Windows FW to be active, but it wreaks havoc with my VPN connection when I don't need it. Is there a way to get Win 7 to recognize my VPN connection as something other than "Unidentified Network" so that I can configure my firewall protection a bit more elegantly?
