With Win 7 Pro we used to be able to set up a machine to how we needed it. Clone it and then set up any other new machines based on that cloned image. It would take about 20 minutes to set up 3 computers. All win updates, software we needed installed, settings, etc.
With Win 8, I don't think that is legally possible. I mean, I've done it without any issue. But when the user had it for about a week or so, it flashed up alerts that the version of Windows wasn't activated. So I had to call in and speak out a series of numbers, and then enter in a series of numbers that was spoken to me.
After that, you're then asked how many copies of this version is being used. I paused and with doubt in my voice I said "20?" The voice activated prompt said that exceeded the amount and my copy couldn't be activated. So I called back went through that all again, said "1 copy" and it activated.
So yeah it works. But for how long until it's flagged and an actual human picks up on it? So I decided to not clone any new windows computers we get. Cause the last thing I need are legal issue against my employer and me.
So my question is, should I be concerned about cloning a computer? I mean cloning is by far the fastest way to go about this when you have 10 to 20 computers to roll out. But I won't do it if this is going to be an issue.
