I'm still trying to wrap my head around the quirks of UEFI and Windows 8 but this is a new issue to me. I've been trying to reinstall Windows 8.1 Pro on a Lenovo Model E555 laptop and I've run into a very strange issue with booting the OS itself.
The laptop basically sits at a blank screen unless I shut off the laptop, insert a flash drive (ANY flash drive) then try to boot it back up again. I have no idea if this is an issue in the BIOS or within the Windows installation itself. If I don't have a flash drive plugged in then Windows simply will not boot. I've reset the BIOS settings countless times and fiddled with UEFI, Legacy boot, etc. I'm stuck at a blank screen with zero HDD activity. Not even a blinking underscore in the corner of the screen. I've never encountered this issue before. The BIOS boot order settings are set to boot the HDD first. Again, the ONLY way it will boot into Windows is if I have some sort of jump drive inserted into the laptop.
Am I overlooking something simple here? What the heck is going on? Thanks in advance.
