4 Gigs is the minimum, 6 gigs you got a decent, affordable cheap PC, 8 gigs is better, 16 gigs you're golden. In the DDR3 modules 8 gigs seems to be the max for one module. So naturally in most laptops and desktops with 2 module units 16 gigs max RAM is the most. Now I know in professional development tools such as CAD and Photoshop 16 gigs may not seem like enough. Load a Virtual Machine and 16 gigs is very weak. My understanding is that the consumer class CPU's such as the Core i7 and i5, with the Motherboard also have memory limitations. There is a certain limit the commercial CPU's can utilize, vs the professional Xeons, right?
