[WIN10] Need a new light weight word processor to open doc files in Win10

Any suggestions? We have no need for something as heavy as MSFT Office365 or even Open Office suite. Is there something that will do this faster that the "suite" programs with a smaller footprint? Wordpad won't open the doc files we need to see or reply to or we'd use it. We don't know the programs used by the people who send us these files so we can't say what type of files they are other than ".doc" files. Once opened in the past they were ordinary text files, mostly from earlier versions of Office or Word.
