Recently got an HP P7-1587, A8-5500, 8G memory, 1TB WD HDD, that came with W8 home preinstalled. Uninstalled all the crud that comes with a manufacturers box, cleaned, defragged, set the BIOS the way I want it (basically, Numlock on and always boot from HDD). All with no problems. Added W7 home as a dual boot, installed Office 2010 on both, created a third drive as a common data drive. Latest updates on both as of this morning. Everything runs fine except for two minor quirks.
Quirk 1 - Numlock is set on in the BIOS. But every time I change users or switch OS's, Numlock is off by the time I login. I know, I know, it's a trivial thing, but it annoys the heck out of me because I use the 10-key pad as part of my login, and shouldn't have to remember to hit Numlock prior to logging on.
Quirk 2 - W7, from login to I'm-ready-to-go, takes about 10 seconds. W8, from login to I'm-ready-to-go, takes about 45 seconds. Important Note - it took about the same amount of time the first time I booted up in W8 as it does now. I've looked, poked, and prodded everywhere I can possibly think of, and I absolutely cannot figure out what's taking so long. There's practically nothing in startup. I've disabled all the check-for-updates I can get my hands on. Event Viewer looks as normal as can be - and according to it, I should be read-to-go in about 12 seconds. I've uninstalled everything except the OS, done benchmarks, reinstalled, done more benchmarks, and nothing changes. Perhaps I'm just impatient, but this really does bug me.
I'm open to suggestions.
And now I get to go into work because once again, one of our vocational student graduates has failed to show up for work on a Saturday. I'll be checking back in late this afternoon.
Thanks in advance, guys and girls.
