Xbox 360 MC Extender issue

So I was given an Xbox 360 S 4GB model. I have replaced the computer in my bedroom with the Xbox and am attempting to use it as an extender to the HTPC in the living room (Windows 7 Ultimate). It syncs up just fine, the HTPC has all the libraries added (mapped network drive from a file server) and can play the files but the Xbox consistently sees no content to play. I have a mix of AVI/Divx, MKV/h264 and a few mp4 and wma files that obviously aren't all supported (I'm slowly working on converting them all to a common format) but the point is there should be something in there the xbox can play. Google hasn't really helped me other than pointing me to rebuilding WMP's database (didn't work) and a hotfix for this general issue (hotfix claimed it wasn't intended for my system). I'm a noob when it comes to Media Center with extenders, I've used MC before but only locally so am I missing some important step somewhere? I just assumed the extender can access any content the host PC can. Do I need a hard drive in the Xbox (it's on my list to get) or should this work fine with the 4GB model?
