[WIN7] Cleaning up Winsxs

I found today that my hard disk was almost full and reclaimed about 100 GB of wasted space by deleting unneded system files using the Disk Cleanup utility. While looking a folder sizes across the system I found that there is this "winsxs" folder that is still taking up a lot of space I want to reclaim. A Google search told me that this is where Windows stores backups of files during updates. There are folders there dating back to the day I installed Windows 7 for the first time. All references I have found so far to cleaning up this folder mention using Disk Cleanup to remove the files by selecting "Windows Update Cleanup" in the program. The problem is (as shown in the attached image) that Disk Cleanup show only 2.13 MB as the space to be recovered but the winsxs folder is 12 GB big. What gives?
