[WIN10] Anyone done a motherboard swap under Windows 10?

My motherboard is over 6 years old and while it's working fine, I am contemplating a swap to something with a more up-to-date chipset (i.e., SataIII, USB3, etc.) I know this violates the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" commandment so I haven't made a firm decision yet. I would also need new memory (DDR3 instead of DDR2) but that would be the only hardware upgrade. Did a little Googling and learned that the Windows 10 upgrade would not allow a mobo swap because there's no product key and it would fail to activate, forcing one to buy a new license. The workaround was to re-install Win7 (or 8) then do the Win10 upgrade again. That's enough work to make me decide against it. Then I read that since the major Win10 update that rolled out in October, it is now possible to do a mobo upgrade and still activate the existing Win10 copy. So what I really want to know is that is it correct that a mobo swap is possible after the Win10 update?
