I just do some maintenance my brother's laptop, HP Pavilion DV6500 (AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual, TK-53 1,76GHz) with Vista.
It was extremely slow in booting, worked also slow, and Vista has not been updated for a long time. I installed SP1, SP2, and huge amount of microsoft updates and fixes, both important and recommended, plus antivirus.
The problem is now that there's not so much free space remains on disc, only 47,8Gb free of 141Gb, so I want to remove the maximum of unnecessary stuff. There is still installed a lot of HP stuff, bloatware.
I am not sure about these points: there is installed McAfee Security Scan Plus, does it make sense to remove it, as I installed new antivirus?
There is installed a lot of apps, shown in Add/Remove programs, which purpose is not clear:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable 10.0.40219 (11Mb) - is it part of update, is it required by Vista or another ms applications?
- two Java:
Java 7 Update 21 - Oracle - 129 Mb (installed during some update),
Java(TM)SE Runtime Environment - Sun - 115 Mb
Does Windows need both this Java?
- Also, does it make sense to leave only important windows updates, and to remove recommended updates?
