Friend was caught by a tech support scammer; what should I expect?

An acquaintance happened to mention to me today that a company was fixing her computer. I immediately became suspicious and upon further questioning learned she had seen a popup saying she had problems with her computer and to call a number. I told her to turn the computer off and call her credit card company, which she has done. I'm going to look at the computer later and since I've never personally been caught by this scam I was wondering what to expect. Since they asked for a credit card, it doesn't sound like the ransomware scam as they require payment in Bitcoin. I was thinking I'd check any programs that run on startup, run malware scans, and hope for the best. That is assuming the computer still boots; otherwise I'll FFR it. Any other suggestions would be welcome.
