I started this thread to ask for some help but its probably going to sound more like a rant...
For the past 15 minutes I have been watching/waiting for my laptop to shut down and update itself without my permission. This is a Windows 8 laptop so Windows Update gave me a 15 minute warning before it decided my computer will be restarted whether I liked it or not. It didn't matter what I was working on at the time.
I just did a google search and it seems I need to edit the local group policy to change this behavior. Sounds easy enough if the MMC snap-in actually worked but it just gives me an error message after I run gpedit.msc. It seems I will have to spend/waist more time fixing this problem.
My biggest grip is the fact that all Windows version now like to "update" when I decide to shut them down. Maybe its just me but when I decide to shut down the computer, that means I am done with it and have other things to do. Instead, I have to babysit a laptop for 10 to 30 minutes while it updates because it warns "not to unplug" while it is doing so. This means I have to keep the laptop plugged in and safe from accidental bumps or spills.
This is enough to make the average person just shut down windows update and be done with it. I will find a solution to gpedit mmc problem but I am very annoyed that I have to beg my laptop not shut down forcing me to babysit for a half hour.
