My old Linksy router was tripping off line frequently plus it doesn't have a USB port. So, I got out the Sam Knows Netgear router and reset it to factory defaults and then connected it. It works fine (USB port also is working with a device attached). I have two computers, a Smart TV, and a hardware device all connected wired to the Netgear router. No wireless devices.
My XP Pro computer can see the Win 8 computer but I am forbidden to access the shared files on it. That's weird as I never had any problems when the Linksy router was being used. XP Pro computer says I need to run the XP network setup on the Win 8 computer using the XP Pro reinstallation disk. That's weird too....yeah, I had to do that years ago on a 98SE computer but why would I need to do this on a Win 8 computer?
The Windows 8 Pro computer cannot see the XP computer. It does see the shared printer which is attached to the XP computer. So, I ran the Network Troubleshooter that says nothing is wrong BUT Network Discovery is turned OFF while file and printer sharing is turned ON. So, I turned on Network Discovery, clicked Apply but it doesn't "take". Network Discovery automatically turns off again. I tried unjoining the network and then rejoining. I still cannot turn on Network Discovery.
