Virtual XP in 7 Pro

How safe from malware is this? I searched on line and saw posts where some were testing malware on it. I want to install a new rom on the Nexus 4. Windows 7 is NOT cooperating. I can see the phone, but I just get the damn "calculating" message. XP took forever, but you got the progress bar with the time remaining on it. At least you knew XP SAW the request. The phone is already rooted, and I want to back it up. 7 just chews away. I have an old laptop with XP Home on it - I rooted the phone with it. I also have virtual XP on this laptop. Security systems flash all kinds of warnings with apps for rooting and even apks. Virtual XP is complaining about no security. The laptop on 7 is using ESET and Online Armor which I prefer over MS. How safe would it be to use virtual XP to back up the phone (I need the Nexus 4 Driver) and to put another ROM on. I have CWM and can get TWRP. Thanks
